Import Duty Charges

Please note that there will be additional costs involved with import of kava to your country depending on regulations. Our shipper (DHL Express) will not deliver your orders unless the duty and taxes imposed have been cleared. Apart from the normal clearance and handling fees of DHL which is about $25 depending on the country, please take note of the regulations below.

New Zealand Laws

Importing for Personal Use

Kava imports are free from tariff duty.

However, it is subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15% which is levied on the sum of the price paid or payable, plus the cost of freight and insurance paid to transport the goods to New Zealand. Customs does not collect duty and GST where the total amount payable (duty and GST combined) on a single import is less than NZ$60.

An Import entry transaction fee of NZ$49.24 will apply on every import, of which NZ$29.26 is for import entry transaction fee and NZ$19.98 is the Ministry of Primary Industries biosecurity system levy.

No special licenses are required however imported kava would be subject to a MPI inspection which delays shipment between 24-48 hours once Officers are available for inspection.

A TSW client registration, also known as a client code, is required for shipments with a Customs value of NZ$1,000 or more.  Application forms for this registration is available at http://www.customs.govt.nz/news/resources/forms/Documents/NZCS%20224.pdf

Importing for Commercial Use

All charges mentioned in importing for personal use applies and -

Commercial importers are required to submit an electronic import lodgement for their shipments. DHL will submit an electronic import lodgement for the shipment once it arrives in New Zealand upon advice of the customer.

Canada Laws

Importing for Personal Use

A 10.5% tariff duty rate is applicable.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applicable on the value of the shipment exclusive of freight cost, however the rate varies by different states.

No special licenses are required for importing kava.

Under the Courier Low Value Shipment (LVS) import process, kava shipments worth CAN$2,500 or less are allowed importation for personal use. This is an expedited process of importing kava.

Importing for Commercial Use

Importing kava for commercial use is prohibited.

USA Laws

Importing for Personal Use

Kava imports are free from tariff duty.

If the value of the shipment is below US$2500, then no additional fees are required.

Importing for Commercial Use

A merchandise processing fee associated with the importation applies. The MPF for formal entries is an ad valorem fee of 0.3464 percent. The maximum amount of the fee shall not exceed $485 and shall not be less than $25. The fee is based on the value of the merchandise being imported, not including duty, freight, and insurance charges.
